      About Cut Down to Stop

Cut Down to Stop is an approach that's clinically proven to help you reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke by up to 50%, making it easier to quit smoking when you're ready.

Smoking can be one of the hardest habits to break. Nicotine replacement therapy such as NICORETTE® Gum and Inhalator can help to make the job easier. But even so, some smokers just aren't ready to give up smoking straightaway. For those people, we've got an alternative approach to quitting smoking - NICORETTE® Cut Down To Stop.

With NICORETTE® Cut Down To Stop, you should aim to give up completely in six months, although some smokers may take up to nine months.

The 4 steps to cutting down

Our four clear steps to cutting down make it easier for you to reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke over 6 - 9 months with NICORETTE®.

      Step 1
0-6 weeks: Cut cigarette consumption by 50%

Establish how many cigarettes you smoke and aim to reduce them by 50%, using NRT whenever you feel the urge to smoke.*

      Step 2
6 weeks - 6 months: Continue cutting down until you are ready to stop smoking

If youve managed to reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke after six weeks, continue to use NRT to reduce your smoking progressively until you feel ready to attempt to stop smoking completely.

      Step 3
      6 - 9 months: Stop smoking

When you’re ready to stop smoking completely, cut out all cigarettes and continue to use NRT for up to a further three months.**

      Step 4
      9 - 12 months:

Gradually cut down the amount of NRT you are using until you are able to stop completely.

How does NICORETTE® work in the Cut Down To Stop programme?

Using NICORETTE® Gum or NICORETTE® Inhalator instead of smoking a cigarette will relieve your cravings while you are preparing to stop.

NICORETTE® Gum and NICORETTE® Inhalator have been clinically proven for the ‘cut down to stop’ method of stopping smoking completely.

*If a reduction in the number of cigarettes has not been achieved after six weeks, professional advice should be sought.

**If a quit attempt cannot be made within nine months of starting treatment, professional advice should be sought.
