Cigarettes are so addictive because of the rapid delivery of a high dose of nicotine to the brain. Due to the short half life of nicotine, smokers require to smoke regularly to maintain a certain level. When nicotine levels drop the cravings for the next cigarette begin.3
Plasma (venous) nicotine profile during 7 hours of cigarette smoking (1 cigarette per hour)

Reinforcing this desired effect of nicotine with each cigarette soon becomes addictive.3

Due to its rapid absorption through the oral mucosa, the time to reach maximum plasma nicotine concentration following a single dose is significantly shorter for NICORETTE® QuickMist than with NiQuitin 4 mg lozenge.
Single dose nicotine pharmacokinetics

NICORETTE® QuickMist demonstrated an increase in nicotine level with peak plasma levels reached in less than 10 minutes. In total 58% more nicotine was absorbed with NICORETTE® QuickMist than with NiQuitin 4mg lozenge during the first 10 minutes.5
Cravings can strike especially at so called “trigger moments”, making smoking cessation an even bigger challenge. Situations linked to smoking such as at home watching TV, driving the car and socialising may make it difficult to quit.6 Other factors that may influence the smokers’ willpower are
-
when under the influence of alcohol7
-
where people are smoking and cigarettes are available7
-
when particularly stressed7
-
in the afternoons and evenings, when withdrawal symptoms may be more frequent and more severe8,9
